Ice Hockey Asian Cup in Kuwait?
Posted by: Hash
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Asian Challenge Cup will be held in Kuwait next week from April 24th–30th. The countries participating in the tournament are Kuwait, UAE, Hong Kong, India, Macau and Thailand.
I had no idea Kuwait has an ice hockey team and that an official tournament is being held here. It’s obviously going to be at the Ice Skating Rink but I will have to get more info on that. Does anyone know more about this?

The IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia is a competition opposing asian national teams not participating to the IIHF World Championships program. It is the 4th edition, Kuwait taking part for the second time after finishing 7th out of 8 teams in 2010.
The Kuwait ice hockey national team made its debut back in 1999 at the Asian Winter Games (AWG) in South Korea (6th out of 6 teams). They didn’t play until the 2007 AWG (7th out of 11 teams). They took part in the 2008 Arab Cup where they faced UAE, Morocco and Algeria, finishing 2nd behind UAE. In 2009, the Kuwait Ice Hockey Association became a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). It was already a member from 1985 to 1992 but was expelled for not developing hockey in the country. In 2010, they also played the Gulf Championship organized in Kuwait, finishing 2nd behind UAE and in front of Saudi Arabia and Oman. A second edition in UAE was scheduled this year but has been postponed until next year. In last february, Kuwait played under the IOC banner at the AWG in Kazakhstan, finishing 6th out of 7 teams in Premier divsion (11th overall).
